Sold my Nikon D60, Upgrading to D90!!! (now, why so?)

  By pinoypalaboy | January 26, 2009

I have sold my camera to a friend last week. It was a very quick or should I say surprising move that compelled me to upgrade to D90. Don’t get me wrong, I really loved my Nikon D60. In fact, all the photos (nice ones indeed) that you may see before this post were all taken using my D60. But I really need to upgrade so I am gonna tell you why.

In the past several weeks before selling the camera, I had this feeling that I think its time for me to upgrade to a new body already since I was looking or should I say hoping to use other set of lenses.

There are many lenses for the d60 but, they do have their limitations. The limitation that I am talking about is the FINANCIAL limitations (or is it just me?). Yeah! Nikon have produced new sets of lenses and will do so in the coming months, but I just noticed that they are priced a bit too high compared to my tiny budget. I love photography and as much as I wanted to explore more, but my pocket on the other hand could not keep up.

So its farewell to my d60 and hello to d90!

Actually, I was thinking that the next camera that I should buy and was hoping to have was the d300. Now here in the Philippines, the body of the Nikon d300 cost around 60,000 – 70,000 pesos. On the other hand the Nikon d90 kit (with the 18-105mm VR lens) cost just around 56,000 at Hidalgo, Quiapo. But before checking out d90, i was looking for a d80 as an alternative. But a couple of researching, forum scouring and hands-on experience on the d90 lead me to choose the d90 instead.

So here are some features of d90 for you to ponder:

1. Intelligent Scene Recognition System – It has face detection feature
2. Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II – EXPEED processing same as d60
3. Nikon D-90 SLR HD movies – this is new feature among DX series 24fps
4. Auto Focus System 11-point AF – a lot more than d60′s 3-point AF
5. New circuitry enhances power consumption - d90 has a cmos sensor which comsumes less power than d60′s CCD
6. The high-resolution 920,000-dot, 3-inch LCD screen – same as d300
7. Nikon D90 GPS system – sweet!
8. Nikon System Legacy – has a larger scope of usable lens

Well, I am planning to buy the unit this week. I was planning to buy only the body. I am alotting 45,000 pesos for the body with a 4gb SD card.

Will update you guys as soon as I get it on my hands

Ciao!

D60 still nice DSLR. pagnasanay ka na sa controls, madali nalang mag adjust ng main factors (speed, iso, apature). Real disadvantage lang talaga is the limitation of the lens. Maganda for example ang 50mm 1.4 pero manual focus. Na try ko na sya gamitin, pero given “shallow depth of field” f 1.4 – 2.2 and small view finder ANG HIRAP MAG FOCUS. Hindi ganon ka effective yung focus indicator. 10/10 ang sharpness ng lens, but it’s no use kung hindi mai-focus. test shots : head to waist shot and head shot, iso 200-400, speed ranging from (1/8 to 1/200). my result: 2 shots focus vs 60 shots blur, view from LCD is OK, pag-open sa PC sa ka makikita ang real quality. Advice: to those considering manual lens, kung meron kayong mahihiraman, try nyo muna. baka mas makatipid pa sa pagkuha ng ibang body like D90. For those who are good at manual, Congrats! – kakainggit!

very well said sir. we have the same point of view about the limitation on lenses.

      thanks for the comment sir!

    d60 lenses expensive?

    - teka.. dapat ba mag ingles? cge na nga..

did you know that with the d60, you can use very old vintage lenses, called pre-ai nikkors? which, are excellent lenses.. for example.. the nikkor-s 50mm f1.4.. so how much is the new af-s 50mm f1.4? i dunno the price, all i know is that i can’t afford the new one.. however the old 50mm f1.4, i bought mine for only Php 3k.. and i think you can find cheaper ones in hidalgo.

The only downside is that you have to manual focus.
to list down all the great nikkor lenses from the film days are endless but they’re what made nikon famous.. so i say, .. to your d60.. sayang! :(

    • pinoypalaboy

you may think of it that way. Although sayang nga kasi i wanted a d60 as a second body especially for wide shots. Pero i am not the type of person for the manual-focus job. I want to make it easier for me siguro, that is why I spent some money on the d90 body and to be able to buy cheaper lens na rin like the “D” ones which they say “some” are better than the new released AF-S lenses..

thanks anyway for the insight. I actually have a friend who prefers d70 and manual lenses. So i think i get what you are trying to tell me.

I was new about cameras, hope you could give me an advised where I could go to attend a class in photography, just to start. I have a d40x which i bought just for my personal used, by the way I’m from Quezon Prov. just for reference.
    thanks

Lenses of d60 priced too expensive? Hmmm… this makes me hesitant now about buying d60 (hehe)

How about Canon 450D? Can you write a review about this camera?

    Thanks!

well, again, I am biased because I’ll tell you to buy a Nikon.

Yes the lenses are expensive… but, it all depends on how you will want to use your camera?

example? will you be using fast zoom lens which costs around 20k and up just for daily photography? (There are a lot of them, do the math) I think not.

there is always that one solution like the one i call “all in one” package for the regular hobbyist which is the 18-200mm lens. it is only 27k – 30k and for me you can sell the kit cause you wont be changing lens for a long time.

Its expensive for me because I wanted to have the good lenses which today are priced a bit expensive (siguro nga kasi bago pa)

Some people say that eventually the prices will go the other way around in due time. Whats expensive now will be cheaper in the future and vice versa
